Love Sarnies? Love British Sandwich Week

Inspiring Ideas for British Sandwich Week

Sandwiches are probably one of the most versatile food inventions and a great British tradition. We are proud to support British Sandwich Week, which runs from 8th to 14th May 2016. Sandwiches are also one of the most popular convenience food, and is attributed to the Earl of Sandwich, around 1792. He was so engrossed in his card game that it was more convenient for him to eat his meat between two slices of bread than it was to get up and leave the game. We’ve come a long way since then, and the sandwich has evolved to become more exciting and tempting. Here are a few tips for sandwiches to celebrate British Sandwich Week, or simply for delicious party food.

The Traditional Closed Sandwich.

As a nation, we eat over 11.5 billion sandwiches each year, with more sandwiches being eaten in hot weather than in cold weather. This is not surprising, as a sandwich makes the ideal summer picnic food. The vast majority of sandwiches are the traditional closed sandwich, with a variety of fillings, and either white or brown bread. There are whole businesses that thrive on simply making sandwiches from simple ham or cheese to the more exotic creations, such as chilli chicken and mango. Have a look at this article from The Telegraph for some ideas of exotic sandwiches.

 Open Sandwich Ideas

Open sandwiches have only one slice of bread or cracker of some kind, with a filling on top. Quite often, it also includes a spread or sauce, which can make it quite messy to eat. So we usually make these smaller, bite sized and served at parties or other social gatherings. When creating open sandwiches, anything goes really, so be creative, with both your toppings and design. Bear in mind size of the sandwich, taking into account that people might find it easier to eat in one or two bites. We’ve put together a small gallery of images to inspire you, so why not adapt these ideas and make up your own variation? Let us have your ideas and we’ll publish them in our gallery.

As for where to eat them – anywhere and any time. If you’re going to a party or picnic, it’s almost a certainty that you’ll be faced with sandwiches of some variety, whether open or closed. Let us have your ideas and we’ll publish them in our gallery.
